Michigan's High School/Tech Initiative

MiConnections (pronounced "My" Connections) is an enrichment project that links youth with disabilities to opportunities to explore jobs and careers in technology-related fields.

MiConnections is part of a national model known as High School/High Tech. It is a systems change demonstration project funded through a federal grant* that was awarded to the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth - Michigan Rehabilitation Services.

MiConnections is designed to support and encourage young people with disabilities to explore and prepare for careers and expand their ideas about employment in today’s and tomorrow’s job market. A network of local or regional MiConnections sites is being developed around Michigan. Local sites will ensure that youth with disabilities have the chance to participate in a wide range of activities in five categories or Guideposts previously known as Design Features. These activities focus on career development, education, training, employment, leadership and opportunities for personal growth.

While participating in MiConnections, youth will explore their own interests and potential and build skills. They will learn more about jobs and employers in their local communities. They will have a chance to explore careers related to science, engineering and technology. They will also be exposed to training and higher education opportunities in Michigan. As a result, young people with disabilities will make better decisions during career planning. And they will be better prepared to enter the technology-driven workforce of the 21st century.
